Here it seems like we are moving along a curved path. Notice that the focus of expansion is bigger on the right than it is on the left, though the expansion upwards is the same as the expansion downards.

Because the optic expansion is greater on the right than on the left, we appear to be curving towards the left. If the upward expansion were larger than the downwards expansion, we would seem to be descending.
