Here a 2 1/2 year old Viki uses a spoon to feed herself. Note that this time, Viki was still being dressed quite like a human child: she is wearing booties and a dress. As Viki became older, she became less tolerant of human clothing. Also note how short her legs are, compared to a human child. Chimpanzees often use their feet as ‘secondary hands.’ If you watch carefully, Viki moves her right foot toward the food bowl at one point. If she were not wearing booties, Viki might have grabbed the bowl with her foot to help steady it. Other clips demonstrate that use of the foot as a third hand.
