Viki Uses Mirror

In her first year, Viki’s play seemed to be laying a strong foundation for mechanical abilities and basic skills. In addition to imitation and motivation, her curiosity was a great help to her learning. As it developed, she explored new things, and in turn, learned about things she may not have otherwise.

At about a year, Viki began to recognize her reflection in the mirror and soon realized the possibilities of being able to see herself. She was soon using the mirror for much the same reasons we would—grooming and examining herself. Over to the left we see Viki removing a loose tooth, using the mirror to guide her in using pliers. This is no easy feat, because mirrors reverse the left-to-right dimension, while preserving up-to-down.
