Ponzo Visual Illusion Experiment
Can two-dimensional depth
cues and framing
effects affect your perception of the size of an object, and
if so, how much of an effect can such cues exert? By using the
visual illusion known as “Ponzo,” this experiment will
attempt to answer these two questions. In order to help answer
the second question (i.e., “How much of an effect can such
cues exert?”), this experiment will employ a psychophysical
technique known as the method
of limits.
The computer will present two horizontal lines
between two tilted lines similar to the display in the interactive
Ponzo demonstration on the previous page. By judging whether or
not the comparison line matches the standard, this experiment
will measure the effect of the Ponzo illusion on your perception
of the relative sizes (i.e., lengths) of two objects.
